Nigger

“I never called anybody a bad word. I was trying to bring — and obviously it has become a national discussion now — I was trying to make a philosophical point,” she said. “And I made it wrong, but I wasn’t dissing anybody. I was trying to make a point, and for that to say that I should be silenced is the reason why I’m saying to you that I’m obviously losing First Amendment rights.”

via ‘Dr. Laura’ to end radio show over racial controversy.

Crazily enough, I’m actually agreeing with Dr. Laura on this one.

Let me just get this part out of the way: “Nigger” is an ugly word with an ugly past. I’m supposing that the history of white people using that word to demean black people is why a black person can say it without serious repercussions but a white person gets jumped all over if they say it. Fair enough. It’s a word with serious baggage.

It would be a slightly better world if NOBODY ever said “nigger” — but there it is.

It’s just a word. It only has as much power as you give it over yourself. I think Dr. Laura was trying to make that point.

God knows, Dr. Laura has spewed enough truly objectionable shit over the years that she’s past due on being smacked down about it. This time, though — I don’t think so.

When the “N” word is used by a racist, such as doctor laura, it becomes one of the most offensive words in language. As for the point she was trying to make, it was so lost in the rest of her rant.

A few years ago, when the word “queer” was used by someone like doctor laura, the intent was to refer to a homosexual as a sexual deviant. And, of course, now it’s part of the language in the GLBT community, usually used in a political context. It’s really not offensive anymore, even when used by homophobes. Now, I think the word “homosexual” has become the naughty word that anti-gay mouthpieces love to use. There must be a strong emphasis on each of the five syllables – “Hō-Mō-SEX-shoe-wall” – and can just hear Rush puking it out. Make it sound really dirty like GON-or-RhEEa. Even the word “gay” has become kind of creepy. It’s an insult when a teen says to another, “Oh, that’s so gay!” I guess “gay” is now replacing the word “queer” in the negative sense. Or maybe it’s going the way of “colored”. “Colored” is still used with respect by really old geezers and in titles such as the NAACP. “Fag” is one of those words that’s used as an affectionate expression between gay men, and continues to be an insult when used by homophobes or even lesbians.

Anyway, where I wanted to go with this is that I think the “N” word is always going to be an ugly word, much like the “C” word (the one that refers to vagina) – I really hate that word, no matter who uses it. I understand why black people (usually men, I think) use the “N” word when referring to another black man. I think it’s similar to gay men using “fag”, but it’s just never going to morph into anything other than an ugly word.

Now, on the other hand, I love using words like “shit” and “fuck”, and variations of them. “Asshole” is another good one. It always pisses my off when I’m watching something on Comedy Central or LOGO and they bleep those words. Will someone tell the morals police that these are not children’s cable channels and mommy can block them the same way she can block the porn.

I think that I know the point she was trying to make too but: 1)she apparently repeated the work like a dozen times much of it in a row; 2)the caller was a black woman married to a white man who was calling in about how her spouse and his friends use of that word bothered her; 3) Doc Laura told her she was being overly sensitive; 4) the young woman made the point that black folks can use the word because they are black-I take that to mean that they have paid their dues by withstanding the horrible shit black people in this country put up with for being black; and 5) Doc Laura is a bitch, nut job who shouldn’t be on the radio anyway.
Isn’t there another Laura too who shouldn’t be on the air-younger than the Doc, Laura Ingraham. They are both just awful women.

I should clarify that I agree with Dr. Laura that she didn’t call anyone a bad word and that she was, somewhat clumsily, trying to make the point that words only have as much power as you give them. I don’t agree with her about her losing her First Amendment Rights. The First Amendment doesn’t offer any protection against an employer demanding that an employee not use certain kinds of language, nor does it prohibit the FCC from forbidding certain kinds of language on the public airwaves. So… please, Dr. Laura. Your First Amendment Rights have not been threatened here. Jeesh.
